Create your USI

A USI is your free lifelong education number. You only need to create it once.

Why you need a USI

You need a USI if you are:

  • studying nationally recognised vocational education and training (VET)
  • seeking a VET student loan
  • a higher education student seeking Commonwealth financial assistance e.g. HELP loan  or enrolling in a Commonwealth Supported Place
  • a higher education student graduating.

Creating a USI

There is no minimum age for a USI but you do need verifiable identification to create a USI.

Make sure your name appears the same on your USI account, Tax File Number (TFN) and enrolment records to avoid enrolment issues, or graduating without delay.

If you are at university, make sure your enrolment records reflects your legal name on your verifiable ID.

We recommend that you use the same identification document to create your USI, your TFN and myGov account.

  1. Access our Student Portal.
  2. Select ‘create USI’.
  3. Enter a personal email address (avoid using training, work or shared email address).
  4. Provide one form of ID.
  5. Secure your account with multi-factor authentication (MFA). If you don’t have a personal mobile or email for MFA, you can still access your USI account using your username, password and security questions.
  6. Your USI account is now activated.

Create your USI now

When you create a USI account you will be prompted to create a password.

Your password/passphrase must:

  • be at least 15 characters in length
  • contain one character from each of the 4-character types
    • uppercase letters (A-Z)
    • lowercase letters (a-z)
    • numbers (0-9)
    • only special characters (! @ # $ % ^ & *).

Your USI password/passphrase must not:

  • be the same as your last password
  • be reset more than once in a 24-hour period
  • be longer than 50 characters
  • contain your USI
  • contain emojis.

A good passphrase example is Coffee@ndB!scuits4Lunch.
