Student name and the USI

When a USI is created the name entered must match the name on the student’s identification documents. The USI Registry System uses the Document Verification Service (DVS) to check the identity document biographic information matches the original record.

If the identification document shows only one name for a student, then a USI must be created with that one name.

If the identification document shows First name and Last name then a USI must be created with the First name and Last name.

International students create their USI using their home country passport and Australian visa, and their USI will reflect their name as it appears on their Australian visa. If the international student’s passport has a single name but the Australian visa has recorded that single name under First and Last name OR entered ‘no name’ under Last name, the USI Registry System will reflect the same.

Student’s USI account details cannot be changed to reflect education or training provider’s record.

If an education or training provider cannot verify a student’s USI, check that the student’s name matches their identification document. The education or training provider’s student management system must match the student’s name as it has been recorded in the USI Registry system when attempting to verify a USI.
