RTOs now have the option to include preferred first and/or last names for their students when creating their USI within the USI Organisation Portal. The official name used to establish the USI account and verify the USI must still match the form of ID used. The preferred name option is designed to assist a student to more easily access their account and be more comfortable with recording their official ID name.
If you currently connect with the USI system via web services using your own Student Management System to create a USI for your students, they will have an option to add their preferred name later. Existing USI account holders will also be able to update their details to include a preferred name.
To include a preferred name in the USI account, you will now notice a new question within the Organisation Portal.
For business or official purposes, is the student known by any other name that is not on their form of ID?
Select 'YES' then proceed to inputting their preferred names into the respective fields.
A similar option will be available for students with single names.
If the preferred name option is now available, when verifying a USI through an SMS, will we be able to verify using the preferred name? If so, would this be USI system related or would the provider of the SMS have to create that ability in their system?
No, USIs must be verified against the student’s legal name, not the preferred name. The preferred names are available to assist the student to retrieve their USI and improve Organisation Portal USI searches.
