Review of RTO USI Reporting in 2016 - Outcomes
The USI Office has now completed an analysis of 2016 AVETMISS data reporting. There has been an overall improvement in USI reporting compared to 2015, with approximately 89% of training in scope reported with a USI. However, there is still room for improvement.
As part of this 2016 data analysis, the USI Office made contact with many RTOs to discuss reporting anomalies and assist RTOs with working through solutions to improve inclusion of USIs in future AVETMISS submissions. Thank you for your cooperation and continuous support for the scheme.
More detailed insights, issues and reporting tips will be shared with RTOs at the upcoming webinar.

System Enhancement: Preferred Name Functionality – NEW
You now have the option to include preferred first and/or last names for your students when creating their USI via the Organisation Portal. The official name used to establish the USI account and verify the USI must still match the form of ID used. The preferred name option is designed to assist a student to more easily access their account and be more comfortable with recording their official ID name.
This new functionality will only apply when using the USI Organisation Portal. If you currently connect with the USI system via web services using your own Student Management System to create a USI for your students, they will have an option to add their preferred name later.
Existing USI account holders will also be able to update their details in their USI Account to include a preferred name.
Please note that USI Transcripts will only reflect the student’s official name (which matches their form of ID), even though a preferred name has been included within their USI account.
More information on the new preferred name functionality on the USI website.
RTO Display Name on USI Transcripts
The RTO name that will be displayed on a USI Transcript is sourced from the RTO name supplied in your AVETMISS submissions. It must be either your RTOs legal name or trading name as currently listed on the national register of VET – training.gov.au. If you submit through a state training authority, you may want to check what name the state training authority has in their system to ensure it is the legal or trading name you wish to appear on your students’ USI Transcripts.
If the trading name your students are familiar with is different to the name displayed on the USI Transcript or the automated notice the USI system sends to a student when the ‘Existing USI Search’/‘Locate USI’ function is used to locate their USI, it is important to let your students know the alternative name.
