Exemptions from USI | Unique Student Identifier

A student has advised that they are exempt from a USI. What do I do?

The student should be permitted to enrol and undertake their chosen course of study or training.

Providers delivering VET training should refer to Fact-Sheet-USI-validation for details on how to meet their AVETMISS reporting obligations, or contact the NCVER by emailing them at support@ncver.edu.au.

Higher Education providers should email TCSIsupport@education.gov.au for guidance on how to satisfy their reporting requirements.

Should providers ask why the student is exempt?

No. The document from the Student Identifiers Registrar confirming exemption from the USI is the only evidence required.

I started my university studies before 1 January 2023 in Australia. I am now overseas still studying with the university and will not return to Australia. Do I need a USI to get my award?

You do not need a USI to complete your studies and receive your award. You are automatically exempt.
