You must enter the passport number not the visa number. If the student hasn’t been issued with a visa you will not be able to use their international passport.
If the student hasn’t arrived in Australia yet you will not be able to create their USI.
If the passport was issued in Hong Kong: When you are creating the USI try selecting country of issue as China.
Check how the name is spelt on the Visa Grant Notice. The name details contained on the “Visa Grant Notice” is how you should enter the name in the USI creation form.
If the Visa has expired the passport won’t verify.
If the student has a new passport and they haven’t advised the Australian Department Immigration of the new details, use the OLD passport number – this should verify.
If the student has an accent (diacritic) in their name, refer to the bottom of the Passport to see how this has been interpreted e.g. ä may be interpreted to read ‘ae’. This is how you must enter the name in the USI creation form.

Please check that you have entered the information exactly as it appears on the form of ID. Ensure you have included a middle name if it is listed on the ID. Check the Registration Number on the birth certificate, it should have numbers or letters. Do not put the forward slash “/” or the numbers afterwards. Only enter the numbers and/ letters in front of the forward slash (“/”).
Extracts of birth certificates will not be accepted, original birth certificates only.

Yes, but only if the student has given you permission. This is done by the student logging into their USI account and setting the permission for your organisation.

No. A training organisation cannot activate a student’s USI. The student is responsible for the security of their USI account, which includes setting their check questions and password. The student is also responsible for granting permission for a training organisation to view and/or update their USI account or view their training record.

No. Training organisations should never login to the student portal or act as the student in any way. This includes activating accounts on behalf of a student.

It allows you to locate a USI by entering the student’s details. You will need the consent of the student.
You must input the student's Family name, DOB and gender and one or more optional details that combine to provide a unique match. In addition the details must be entered exactly as they appear in the USI Registry System.
Note: Please be aware that using the 'Existing USI Search' and 'Locate USI' function will generate a text message or email to the USI Account Holder notifying them that someone is trying to search for their USI.
