What if another USI account matches my details?Close the What if another USI account matches my details? FAQ item.
There could be 3 reasons for this:
- You could have forgotten that you created a USI;
- Your Training Organisation may have created one for you, or
- There could be someone with similar details to yours.
You can use the ‘forgotten USI’ on our website to retrieve your USI.
If this doesn’t work please contact the USI Office.

What are the benefits of a USI?Close the What are the benefits of a USI? FAQ item.
The USI will enable you to access all your records completed after 1 January 2015 through your USI account. For example, if a training provider no longer exists you can still access your training records through your USI account.
Training providers can access (with your permission) your prior learning to assess you for capabilities for undertaking appropriate courses and learning pathways although they will only be able to see training you completed after 1 January 2015.

International students in Australia
If you are an international student studying a nationally recognised course in Australia with an Australian training provider you will need a USI.
All international students in Australia will have a non-Australian passport and will have been issued with an Australian Visa. This will allow you to use your passport as proof of ID when creating your USI.
International students studying offshore
If you are an international student studying offshore, and do not intend on travelling to Australia to complete or undertake study, you do not need a USI.
Australian students offshore
If you are an Australian student studying offshore with an Australian training provider you will be able to create a USI following the normal process.
New Zealand students
If you hold a New Zealand passport and you intend to come to Australia to study, you will not be able to create a USI until you have entered Australia. You cannot apply for a USI using your New Zealand passport while you are still in New Zealand. This is because New Zealand citizens do not require a visa to enter Australia, so we do not have proof of your ID until your passport is recorded upon entry into Australia.
